Windows Phone 7 was unveiled just four short months ago in the US and was aimed very much at the consumer end of the market. Six weeks after its release, around 1.5 million units had been sold to retailers and mobile operators. However, in January of 2011, sales were announced as weak. Compared with Apple's iPhone 4 which sold 1.7 million units in 3 days, the figures didn't stack up but they were said to have still fallen within Microsoft's expectations. With Google's Android recently announced as topping the smartphone charts, does Windows Phone 7 make Microsoft a legitimate competitor to Apple and Google in the mobile world?
Launched just a few months ago, the WP7, developed by the Microsoft company, is now in partnership with Nokia and this partnership has been hailed by many as one that will help Microsoft re-draw the battle lines in the Smartphone wars. As we all know, Apple has been doing huge things with its latest version of iPhone and since Google Android entered the market, it too has been a heavy contender for the top spot in the fight for the ultimate smartphone crown.
Before the Microsoft deal with Nokia, the WP7 was a nice little addition into the mix when it came to choosing a smartphone but it wasn't breaking any records or really contending in a serious way. Now however, according to some writers, the Microsoft-Nokia deal has sprung a rather interesting surprise because a marriage of Microsoft software with Nokia's hardware magic could be one made in heaven!
This Microsoft-Nokia deal offers a very real threat to the Apple/Google competition because a partnership between Microsoft's amazing software and Nokia's hardware magic could result in a very fine product indeed. Nokia could easily have chosen to use Google Android's platform making it truly a one-horse race, however, it has been said that by joining with Microsoft, 'Nokia is helping create a viable "third horse" in the mobile operating system race'. It is still early days and most think that the Nokia WP7 phones will not be available until 2012.
As Apple, Google Inc and Microsoft continue to battle it out, the winner will almost certainly be the consumer. There should be more choice, greater quality and quantity and more competitive pricing. There is so much untapped potential available to marketers to reach this whole new generation of smartphone consumers too so it means great things for mobile marketers.
