You have carried it in your purse, your briefcase or kept it in your pocket all the time, ready to work at a minutes notice. It may even be part of what you just thought was a plain old cell phone. It has just about replaced the bulky laptop computer that everyone swore by when they first arrived on the landscape of the information superhighway. Now we can't imagine our lives without some sort of variation of this technological wonder. What is it? A PDA.

PDA's or a Personal Digital Assistant, are mobile devices used as a personal information manager and can perform various functions simultaneously. Also referred to as 'Smart phones', they easily perform functions that used to be only done on computers and laptops. Now the PDA can be synchronized to the laptops or computer share information or work simultaneously with. You save time, effort and most importantly, money.

Some PDA's have touch screens, while others staying true to using soft keys, a pad, a numeric keypad or even a mouse. The most popular brands today include Apple, HTC, Nokia and RIM Blackberry, although there are a lot of less known name brands on the market today. They can also be synchronized to a computer or another PDA. The possibilities of the use of PDA's can be endless.

You can purchase a PDA which functions solely as an internet device, without a cell phone, but that is quickly going the way of the dinosaur. The expectations of today's PDA's are that they include an appointment calendar, a to-do or task list, an address or contact book, with a note or memo program as well. They can also have a detachable pen or "stylus" which enables the user to tap on the screen to make selections. Others prefer the old method of using the forefinger to point and drag their selections, but this can be quite cumbersome for some users. Some models offer both options, while others are still frustrated with inaccuracies and mixed results often arise.

Most plans also include upgrades as well as downgrades, where the consumer can choose exactly the function of which they are most comfortable. Also, most plans also carry a 24 hour return policy, should your purchase not perform exactly the way you had anticipated. Ask lots of questions, and make sure you are buying the right PDA for your work and lifestyle needs.
