In a recent interview, Ivan Seidenberg, CEO of Verizon Communications clearly indicated that his group wanted to see a CDMA version of the iPhone cell phone on his network as well as a cell phone plan on Verizon to come out soon. This is of course no surprise to anyone seeing how much of a game changer the iPhone has been for AT&T. The iPhone has transformed the smart phone into something more analogous to a personal computer of sorts.
This would be a breakthrough for Verizon as its CDMA network has better battery life than the GSM networks and it sounds as though Verizon is getting ready to speed up its network as well. Seidenber states, "Eventually, it's our view we'll get to carrying Apple (NSDQ: AAPL)."
Slow network speeds were the complaint by early iPhone adopters. The iPhone was often viewed as 'crippled' when on At&t's network. For those users who are Google Map enthusiasts, the 3G network was just not good enough and a WiF hotspot had to be found. Verizon is planning rolling out a 4G network nation wide and will be ready for the world's top smart phone indead.
Apple is building a CDMA version but the Chinese iPhone probably won't be compatible with Verizon without significant mods. So for North America it will be a GSM iPhone and only China will see the CDMA iPhone many analysis maintain. One reason for the resistance of Apple to put together a CDMA iPhone is that these devices cost more to build and Apple has been historically focused on high margins rather than going after market share.
Other talk of his company merging with Vodafone, Verizon's CEO also was rather dismissive of.
"Another merger doesn't offer much appeal at this time," Verizon CEO notes.
