For those of us who are uninitiated in the world of technology, the buzz about unlocked phones is just that -- buzzzzzzz. Most of us don't know what it means, or why we need to unlock something we apparently have access to every day. In fact, unlocking, sounds like something we shouldn't be messing with, so we haven't exactly burned up the internet searching for Blackberry unlocking codes.

The fact is, unlocking your phone or Blackberry is actually a good thing for many people. After all, it has only been locked by the carrier you bought it from by a set of software instructions in the first place in order to prevent you from leaving them in search of better options. It also allows them to charge you outrageous rates when you are 'roaming' because you can't update your phone to a local SIM card.

For the consumer, the idea of using a SIM handset - phones that take a little card to tell it how to operate - is that it would be easy to switch carriers, or to use SIM cards that are local to the area you travel to frequently whenever you desire.

The practice of carriers locking phones defeats this purpose and led to a class action suit in California in June, 2004, filed by the Foundation for Taxpayer and Consumer Rights. Consumers have the right to an unlocked phone, at least after their initial contract period has expired.

Cell phones and Blackberries that have been unlocked are in higher demand should you decide to sell, and are more flexible to your needs. There are those who have realized that the clamor to have cell phones unlocked is so great that they are in great competition to provide unlocking services to you for a fee. On the internet hacking directions are available to aid you in unlocking your phone or Blackberry yourself. If you do it incorrectly, however, your phone may be ruined.

Properly unlocking a Blackberry completely removes the SIM restriction which will allow you to use it with any network worldwide, even GSM or HSPA. Once you have unlocked your Blackberry, it remains unlocked forever. Because your Blackberry is an expensive device, it will be important to make sure to have it unlocked by a company you can trust to do it right.

There are three main reasons for people to have an unlocked phone or Blackberry: (1) it increases the value of the phone for resale, making it more appealing to a wider range of buyers; (2) it allows you to shop for plans and prices that suit your needs, changing to any carrier that is compatible with your phone; and (3) it could save additional money in bypassing roaming charges by allowing you to insert different SIM cards when you travel.
